Simple DIY Halloween Decor

I decided yesterday that I wanted to do a little decorating for Halloween. Mind you, I'm not very crafty and didn't want to spend a whole lot of money. So I came up with a simple and inexpensive way to give my apartment a little Halloween/Autumn somethin'.

Things you'll need:

  • An assortment of mini pumpkins and gourds. These are really inexpensive right now at the grocery store.
  • Manzanita branches. I had these left over from my wedding that I bought at save-on-crafts.com. They can be a little pricey, but they'll last forever and can be used all year around.
  • Birch pillar candles. I bought these from Pottery Barn last year. (Not shown in photo)
  • Assorted vases
  • Black spray print primer
  • Black glossy spray paint
  • Gloves
  • Protective sheeting I started with newspaper but ended up going back to the hardware store for a plastic drop cloth. I was afraid that the paint was seeping through and onto the patio tile.
What to do:
  1. Lay down the protective sheeting, put on your gloves, and spray primer on the nubby gourds and branch(es). I only sprayed one branch and kept the other two natural.
  2. Once primer is dry, spray paint first coat of black glossy paint.
  3. Once first layer is dry, spray second layer and let dry. (about a half hour to be safe)
  4. Once second layer is dry, turn items over and repeat steps. It's a good idea to give at least an hour before handling the items.

I used the small white pumpkins to anchor down my natural manzanita branches in a tall square glass vase. I surrounded them with with my birch pillar candles on my coffee table.

I placed the black glossy branch on my picture ledge above my television. Since my walls are a light color and my ledge and picture frames are all black, the black branch kind of pops off the wall. I like this so much I plan to leave it up all the time.

For my dining table, I placed the black spray painted gourds with the mini pumpkins in a shallow, square glass vessel. I love how the glossiness of the paint accents the texture of the gourds.

Total cost (not including items I already had): $28

Happy Halloween!
